Oil Plumes Headed to Florida Keys

BP has announced that approximately 20% of the oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico is finally being contained and brought to the surface, but scientists worry that dangers to the deepwater wildlife will be much worse than anticipated.

Oil Spill Containment Dome Delivered

A massive containment dome arrived at the site of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday. By Monday, BP hopes the 4-story tall iron funnel will start containing approximately 85% of the oil being released.

President Obama’s Nuclear Posture Review

President Obama announced on Monday that limits will be placed on the circumstances in which the United States will use nuclear arms in response to attacks from countries who are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. A summit meeting to discuss the move is planned for next week.

President Obama hopes that this treaty will begin the transition to a world where nuclear arms are obsolete.

Drilling Plans Mean Independent Energy

Today, President Obama proposed a plan to drill for both natural gas and oil on the eastern coastline of the United States. While supporters of developing independent energy sources back the plan, it has also received criticism from the environmentally conscious.

Aside from drilling on the U.S. coastline of the Atlantic, the plans include drilling projects around the eastern Gulf of Mexico as well as on the northern coast of Alaska.
